How to measure your space.
When you're measuring kitchen cabinets, it's important to capture dimensions for the walls, doors and windows to the outside of the moulding. We'll show you how in six steps.
1. Sketch it out
The diagram above gives you a good idea of what's needed to capture the correct measurements for your project. If you're keeping the cabinets in the same place, then then map out the existing kitchen. Are you moving things around? Then you need to sketch out the new layout.

2. Measure horizontally
Are you keeping your current layout?
If so, then you’ll need to measure the current cabinets from the outside, edge to edge.

Are you changing the layout?
If you’re going to have a new layout, measure the entire length of each wall to determine your cabinet configuration.

3. Measure Vertically
Ceiling heights are typically 8 feet in older homes and 9 feet in newer homes.
Measure from the ceiling to the floor in several different locations, including each corner and the center of the room.

4. Find the Center Point
Are you keeping the appliances and the sink in the same place? If so, you'll need to account for them.
For example, measure from one wall to the center of the sink and note the number. Repeat the same exercise for appliances, gas and water lines.

5. Measure Windows & Doors
Next, it's time to measure the height and width of your windows and doors. Don't include moulding or trim in your measurements.

6. Measure Existing Cabinets
Measure the width and height of the cabinets in your space now.
